ABSTRACT

Haematuria is a serious clinical manifestation of urinary system disease, occurring in micro or macroscopic forms. In this article two cases of macroscopic haematuria associated with Leptospira interrogans serogroup Canicolainfection are related. The initial clinical examination revealed macroscopic haematuria, tachycardia, tachypnea, fever, increased capillary perfusion time, intestinal hypomotility, in addition to jaundice of the oral mucosa. Leukocytosis, proteinuria, glycosuria, pyuria and azotemia were common findings in both cases. Microscopic serum agglutination test was performed for titration of antibodies against Leptospira interrogans. Treatment included supportive therapeutic measures (fluid therapy), hematuria control and antibiotic therapy. Seven days after the manifestation of the initial clinical signs, both animals were discharged from the hospital without complications.

ABSTRACT

The aim was to verify the compatibility between different brands of urinary dipsticks, for both human and veterinary use, and to compare the semiquantitative parameters of this instrument with quantitative methods. For this, 77 fresh samples of urine from dogs and cats were analyzed e and 04 models of reagent strips were tested. Regarding urinary density, a reasonable correlation was observed between the quantitative and semiquantitative methods in those samples with acidic pH, which did not occur in those with neutral or alkaline pH. Regarding the protein concentration, there was similarity from 53.3% to 83.3% between the brands and in the comparative analysis between the control strip and the photometric analysis, there was a reasonable correlation (rs = 0.69752 to 0.75074). In cut-off point of 15mg/dL protein, the sensitivity of the reagent strip was 82.5% and 100% for canine and feline urine, respectively. Regarding hematuria, there was a reasonable divergence of results between sedimentation and tested dipsticks. As for pyuria, there is a low sensitivity of the strips in relation to canine samples with many false negative results (33% to 75%), while in feline samples the sensitivity was 100%. Thus, regardless of the brands, the reagent strips should serve only as a rapid screening test, while the use of quantitative methods in the clinical evaluation of the patient from urinalysis is more appropriate.

ABSTRACT

The profile of 40 farms with pastures invaded by Pteridium arachnoideum in northern Mato Grosso as well as the prevalence of bovine enzootic haematuria (BEH) in dairy and beef cattle in the region are described. The BEH was observed in 15/40 properties with prevalence rates ranging from 0.8 to 16.6%. Aspects related to the deployment of pastures and management are discussed. In most farms where BEH occurs, the pastures were highly invaded by the plant, whereas in most farms where HEB does not occur the pastures had less than 10% of Pteridium arachnoideum. Deforestation and the use of fire were determinant factors in the invasion of the paddocks by P. arachnoideum...

ABSTRACT

With the objective of explaining the question of survival of cattle affected by Enzootic Hematuria, when transferred to areas free of Pteridium arachnoideum, the study was accomplished in two parts: a) by a questionnaire regarding the epidemic aspects of that illness, which was answered by the proprietors of 73 cattle establishments visited in the areas of Southeast of Brazil, where P. arachnoideum is prevalent. The applied questionnaire to the proprietors indicates that enzootic hematuria is responsible for serious socioeconomic problems; b) clinical and laboratorial attendance of 51 cattle of this area affected by Enzootic Hematuria, between 2007 and 2011, transferred to area free of P. arachnoideum. More than 90% of the affected animals by HEB died before two years after removal from areas free of P. arachnoideum.

ABSTRACT

From January 1990 to December 2010, 4,872 dogs were necropsied at the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Seventy six dogs (1.6%) had uroliths along the urinary tract. The epidemiological profile of the affected dogs showed predominance of males (64.5%); adults (52.6%); and pure breeds (56.6%). Clinical signs suggestive of urolithiasis were reported in 30.3% of the dogs and consisted mainly of hematuria, anuria, dysuria and urinary incontinency. The uroliths were found in one or more anatomical sites, and the main affected ones (in descending order) were urinary bladder, kidney, and urethra. Ureteral urolithiasis was not observed. Secondary lesions to urolithiasis were found in about 40% of the cases. The most prevalent (in descending order) were cystitis, urethral obstruction, hydroureter, hydronephrosis, urinary bladder rupture (with uroperitoneum), and pyelonephritis. In 25% of the affected dogs, spontaneous death occurred or euthanasia was performed due to the secondary lesions of urolithiasis. Extra-renal lesions of uremia were found in 11.8% of the cases.

ABSTRACT

A 1-year-old castrated crossbred male cat was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for evaluation of urinary retention associated with a subluxation at T12-T13 caused by a car accident. Urethral sphincter denervation by transection of hypogastric and pudendal nerves was performed to allow bladder emptying, but after three months post operation the cat had a urinary retention recurrence. Endoscopic urethral sphincterotomy was done resulting in urinary incontinence for four months.

ABSTRACT

Three adult female bovines coming from a semi extensive and traditional property located at the Roncador Municipality, Paraná State, Brazil, were studied due to they presented simultaneous neoplasias in urinary blaster and upper alimentary syndrome associated to the spontaneous consumption of the Pteridium genotype. The animal’s age varied between five years and a half and seven years and a half. The clinical symptomatology seen included: body conditions loss, progressive emaciation, dyspnea and noisy breathing, rise of the external volume in oropharynx level, relative disphagia, salivation and halitosis; and intermittent hematuria or microhematuria. The main findings macro and microscopical were important in tongue, esophagus, oropharynx, cardia and urinary blaster consisting of papillomas, papillomas in transition to carcinomas and squamous cells. Of then, the upper locations (tongue and oropharynx) were considered malignant injuries and benign the rest. To the tongue and oropharynx level a malignant transition of squamous cells from papillomas to carcinoma was seen. In esophagus, squamous papilloma was diagnosed, meanwhile in urinary blaster multiple injuries with erosive and/or papillary character were present. It is peculiarized by a diverse degree of cellular differentiation and invasive epidermoide carcinoma well characterized. The papilomatosive injuries, irregular in number and size, were constituted by three development phases: incipient, active and in regression. Epidemiological, clinical, macro and histomorfological findings support other researchers‘ papers that suggest that the signs and injuries match with phases and/or a same pathology‘s syndromes, determined by the consumption of the Pteridium genotype. The intoxication can be seen as a direct answer to a complex multifactorial epidemiologic relation, where there is a narrow connection between the toxic principles of the bracken fern and the infection for bovine papillomavirus...

ABSTRACT

Tal comportamiento obedece a razones culturales, desinformación y limitaciones financieras.

A documental research of 63 livestock owners and managers with chronic poisoning by Pteridium’ genotypes of the Municipalities of Sapopema and Sâo Jerónimo da Serra, Paraná State, Brazil, was carried out with the purpose of evaluating the attitudes, behavior and knowledge level of rural producers of the chronic toxicosis and weed syndromes, in order to design strategies focused minimizing on economical features in those geographical areas. In the farms visited, the 1.6% of the animals showed clinical sings of the losses, being females 3 to 5 years old the most affected. Of the clinically sick animals, 96.1% showed bovine enzootic hematuria (BEH) symptoms, including animals not older than 2 years old and 3.9% were identified with upper alimentary syndrome (UAS). The 10.3% of producers admitted that cows with BEH were regularly milked. This and other observed facts were a cause of growing concern in public health issues. 61.9% of the owners used various paliatives because hey have strong believes in recovering the affected animals and selling them, because they have strong believes in recovering the affected animals and selling them afterwards. On the other hand, it is clear that important reforms heading to the establishment and improvement of the pasturing fields are absent, for strategies of supplementary feeding are not being planned, although rural owners are concern about poisoning because of its serious economic consequences, effects on public health, not with standing. Such behavior obeys to cultural reasons, lack of information and financial conditions. This compromising result require the urgent intervention of the public sector to adopt educative actions that can modify in an effective way the today’s behavior and also begin an integrated program to control the problematic situation.

ABSTRACT

The bovine papillomavirus type 2 (BPV-2) involvement in the aetiology of chronic enzootic haematuria associated to bracken fern ingestion has been suggested for a long time. However, a few reports have shown the presence of the BPV-2 in urinary bladder tumors of cattle. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of the BPV-2 infection in the urinary bladder of cattle with chronic enzootic haematuria in Brazilian cattle herds. Sixty-two urinary bladders were collected from adult cattle in beef herds from the north region of the state of Paraná, Brazil. According to clinical and pathological finds the specimens were distributed in three groups: the group A was constituted by 22 urinary bladders with macroscopic lesions collected at necropsy of cattle with clinical signs of chronic enzootic haematuria; the group B by 30 urinary bladders with macroscopic lesions collected in a slaughterhouse of cows coming from bracken fern-endemic geographical region; and the group C (control) by 10 urinary bladders without macroscopic lesions collected from asymptomatic cattle in a bracken fern-free geographical region. By a semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, with an internal control, a fragment of the BPV-2 L1 gene with 386 bp length was amplified in 36 (58 percent) urinary bladder. The rate of BPV-2 positive urinary bladders was 50 percent (11/22) for group A, 80 percent (24/30) for group B, and 10 percent (1/10) for group C (control). The rate of the positive results found in groups A and B that included urinary bladder samples with macroscopic lesions was 67 percent (35/52) and the detection of the BPV-2 in both groups was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in the control group. RFLP with Rsa I and Hae III enzymes evaluated the specificity of the BPV-2 amplicons. The PCR internal control that amplified a 626 bp fragment of the ND5 gene of the bovine mitochondrial genome was amplified in all analyzed samples and excluded false-negatives or invalid results in the semi-nested PCR...
